Locals would add a walk along the Water of Leith to Stockbridge, dinner on the Shore in Leith and an afternoon in the free National Museum of Scotland. - [Where to eat and drink in Edinburgh](https://onlyedinburgh.com/explore/food-and-drink/): Edinburgh’s best food is mostly outside the tourist streets around the Castle. Leith, especially the Shore, is the city’s food heartland; Stockbridge and Bruntsfield are best for brunch and cafés; and the Old Town is worth it if you step one street off the Royal Mile. - [What’s on in Edinburgh: festivals, markets and events](https://onlyedinburgh.com/explore/whats-on/): Edinburgh’s calendar is built around two peaks: the August festivals, including the Fringe, and the winter season of Edinburgh’s Christmas and Hogmanay. Edinburgh’s Christmas 2026 runs from 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 in Princes Street Gardens and on George Street. - [Plan a trip to Edinburgh: itineraries and local tips](https://onlyedinburgh.com/explore/plan-a-trip/): Two to three days is enough for a first visit to Edinburgh: one day for the Old Town and Castle, one for the hills and the New Town, and one for neighbourhoods like Stockbridge and Leith. Spring and early autumn are the best balance of weather, light and crowds. - [Best day trips from Edinburgh by train and bus](https://onlyedinburgh.com/explore/day-trips/): The easiest day trips from Edinburgh by public transport are South Queensferry for the Forth Bridges, the seaside town of North Berwick, Stirling for its castle, Linlithgow Palace and the city of Glasgow. All are reachable by train from Waverley in about an hour or less. - [What to do in Edinburgh when it rains](https://onlyedinburgh.com/explore/rainy-days/): On a wet day in Edinburgh, head for the free National Museum of Scotland or the Scottish National Gallery, go underground at The Real Mary King’s Close, or visit Camera Obscura near the Castle. Then find a pub with a fire: the rain rarely lasts all day. - [Free things to do in Edinburgh](https://onlyedinburgh.com/explore/free-things/): Many of Edinburgh’s best experiences are free: climbing Arthur’s Seat or Calton Hill, the National Museum of Scotland and National Galleries, the Royal Botanic Garden, the Water of Leith walkway and Portobello beach. ## Guides - [The best things to do in Edinburgh: 30 picks from a local](https://onlyedinburgh.com/guides/best-things-to-do-in-edinburgh/): The essential things to do in Edinburgh are Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile and its closes, Arthur's Seat, Calton Hill, the free National Museum of Scotland and Victoria Street. Then find a pub with a fire and wait for the light to change. - [Things to do in Edinburgh in winter](https://onlyedinburgh.com/guides/things-to-do-in-edinburgh-in-winter/): Winter in Edinburgh, from November to February, means short days, low golden light and fewer crowds outside the Christmas season. Spend the daylight on viewpoints like Calton Hill and Arthur's Seat, the afternoons in free museums and galleries, and the evenings in Old Town pubs. Pack waterproofs, warm layers and shoes with grip. - [Three days in Edinburgh, done properly](https://onlyedinburgh.com/guides/three-days-in-edinburgh/): For three days in Edinburgh, spend day one in the Old Town (Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, Victoria Street and Greyfriars), day two on the hills and in the New Town (Calton Hill at sunrise, Arthur's Seat, the Scottish National Gallery), and day three like a local in Dean Village, Stockbridge and Leith. - [Where to eat in Edinburgh, by neighbourhood](https://onlyedinburgh.com/guides/where-to-eat-in-edinburgh/): The best places to eat in Edinburgh are mostly away from the tourist streets around the Castle. Leith, especially around the Shore, is the city's food heartland; Stockbridge and Bruntsfield are best for brunch, bakeries and relaxed neighbourhood restaurants; and in the Old Town, step one street off the Royal Mile. ## Photo spots - [Calton Hill](https://onlyedinburgh.com/photo-spots/calton-hill/): Calton Hill is a short climb from Waterloo Place, about ten minutes' walk from Waverley station, and gives the classic view west over the Old Town and Edinburgh Castle. For the postcard shot, stand by the Dugald Stewart Monument. Go at sunrise for soft light and an empty hill; it's free and open at all times. - [Dean Village](https://onlyedinburgh.com/photo-spots/dean-village/): Dean Village is a former milling village on the Water of Leith, a ten-minute walk from the West End of Princes Street. The classic view is from the footbridge looking at Well Court, the red sandstone building with the clock tower. Go early in the morning to avoid the crowds; it's free and has steep steps down Bell's Brae. - [Circus Lane](https://onlyedinburgh.com/photo-spots/circus-lane/): Circus Lane is a curving cobbled mews lane in Stockbridge, just off Royal Circus, with the spire of St Stephen's church at the end. It's free and flat, and best photographed on overcast days or early in the morning. People live here, so keep noise down and don't block doorways. - [Victoria Street](https://onlyedinburgh.com/photo-spots/victoria-street/): Victoria Street is a curving street of colourful shopfronts that runs from George IV Bridge down to the Grassmarket in the Old Town. The best view is from Victoria Terrace, the raised walkway above the shops. Go before 8am to have it almost to yourself; it's free to visit. - [Arthur's Seat](https://onlyedinburgh.com/photo-spots/arthurs-seat/): Arthur's Seat is an extinct volcano in Holyrood Park, about 251 metres high, a short walk from the bottom of the Royal Mile. The full climb from Holyrood takes most people 45 minutes to an hour; the route from Dunsapie Loch is much shorter. It's free, often very windy, and best at golden hour. - [Greyfriars Kirkyard](https://onlyedinburgh.com/photo-spots/greyfriars-kirkyard/): Greyfriars Kirkyard is a historic graveyard in the Old Town, entered beside the Greyfriars Bobby statue at the top of Candlemaker Row. Its weathered stone monuments and the view of Edinburgh Castle over the wall make it one of the city's most atmospheric spots, especially on misty mornings. It's free to visit. - [The Shore, Leith](https://onlyedinburgh.com/photo-spots/the-shore-leith/): The Shore is Leith's historic waterfront, where the Water of Leith meets the docks, about 15 minutes from the city centre by tram. Old warehouses, moored boats and waterside restaurants make it best at blue hour, just after sunset, when the lights reflect in the water. It's free, flat and great for dinner afterwards. - [Portobello Beach](https://onlyedinburgh.com/photo-spots/portobello-beach/): Portobello Beach is Edinburgh's sandy beach and Victorian promenade, about three miles east of the city centre and reachable by regular Lothian buses. It faces the Firth of Forth, so it's one of the few places in the city to watch the sun rise over the sea. It's free and flat. ## Neighbourhoods - [Old Town](https://onlyedinburgh.com/neighbourhoods/old-town/): Edinburgh's Old Town runs along the ridge from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, with the Royal Mile as its spine and dozens of narrow closes off either side. It's the busiest part of the city, so go before 9am, explore the closes and head downhill to the quieter Canongate. - [New Town](https://onlyedinburgh.com/neighbourhoods/new-town/): Edinburgh's New Town is a grid of Georgian streets, crescents and squares built from the 1760s, just north of Princes Street. Together with the Old Town it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Come for George Street's shops and restaurants, the grand circles of Moray Place and the view from Calton Hill. - [Stockbridge](https://onlyedinburgh.com/neighbourhoods/stockbridge/): Stockbridge is a village-feel neighbourhood on the Water of Leith, about 15 minutes' walk north of Princes Street. It's known for its Sunday market, independent shops and cafés, Circus Lane, and the riverside walkway to Dean Village. It's where many locals spend their weekends. - [Leith](https://onlyedinburgh.com/neighbourhoods/leith/): Leith is Edinburgh's port, about 15 minutes from the centre by tram. It was a separate town until 1920 and still has its own identity. The Shore, where the Water of Leith meets the docks, has some of the best restaurants in the city, and Leith Walk is full of independent cafés and shops. - [Bruntsfield](https://onlyedinburgh.com/neighbourhoods/bruntsfield/): Bruntsfield is a leafy residential area just south of the Old Town, beside Bruntsfield Links and the Meadows. With neighbouring Marchmont, it's classic Edinburgh tenement territory, full of independent cafés, delis and relaxed restaurants. It's a 20-minute walk from the Royal Mile. - [Portobello](https://onlyedinburgh.com/neighbourhoods/portobello/): Portobello is Edinburgh's seaside suburb, about three miles east of the centre, with a long sandy beach and a Victorian promenade. It's reachable by regular Lothian buses and is popular for walks, sea swimming and sunrise over the Firth of Forth. ## Only Edinburgh Photo Walks - [Old Town photo walk](https://onlyedinburgh.com/photo-walks/old-town-photo-walk/): A relaxed portrait session through Edinburgh's Old Town with a local photographer, visiting Victoria Street, the closes off the Royal Mile and the best Castle views.
